2015 Oscar Best Picture Nominees – Introduction

21 Feb

As those of you who have been following this blog for a while know, it’s a tradition for me to attend then annual AMC Best Picture Showcase, during which AMC Theaters show all of the Best Picture nominees for the year in two days, on the two Saturdays prior to the annual Oscars telecast (a.k.a. the Holiest of Holy Days).  In fact, it’s become so ingrained a tradition that I stop seeing movies that are anticipated Oscar nominees around the end of the year, to better experience as many of the nominees as possible for the first time during those weekends.

As those of you who follow me on Facebook know, this year’s marathon sold out (a first) fully two weeks before the first weekend.  This year, there was a chance that the St. Louis area would host a 24-hour marathon the day before the ceremony (that would be today).  I put down a deposit on tickets and waited.  The requisite number of tickets were not sold, so not only was there no 24-hour marathon, but by the time this became clear, the “regular” marathon was already sold out.  So this year, I’m left to my own devices.

I’d already seen American Sniper, which left me to watch 7 films before Sunday evening.  We watched Boyhood last night, and I’ve divided the rest of the movies into pairs.  As with last year, I’ll post short reviews (including Sniper and Boyhood) through the next couple of days, with my final evaluations at the end.

Here we go…
